At one point or another, we have been hurt to a point of almost destruction. We have experienced pain beyond words, grief beyond consolation and innumerable heartbreaks. Among these, and all the problems that life throws us, we manage to survive. Before I continue, I would like to congratulate you for making through life, scathed yes, but definitely stronger.

I am writing a special piece that I hold dearly: how travelling helps you to let go of all your painful experiences. It is quite special because I can personally relate to this in a spiritual level. For someone who has experienced a lot of failures and pain, I have tried numerous methods and measures to heal and move on with my life. Shopping therapy, clubbing, jumping from one relationship to another, name it, I tried it. To my surprise nothing worked. I was still the same broken person before I tried to divert my attention to these earthly matters.  [Read more…]

The Things You’ll Leave Behind on the Gosaikunda Trek, Langtang, Nepal (Part 3)

The sun sets at Lauribinayek, bringing the day to a close.

The next morning, despite the smoke-filled cabin where some felt sick, the team was ready and at full strength. All 19 of us were up before our alarms, excited for the beginning of the day. [Read more…]

The 7 Mantras of Travel

One of the things we review as a group before setting off on a journey together are the 7 mantras of travel. Some may call these mantras “rules” or “expectations,” but they are offered more as an opportunity for personal reflection. The goal is to have each person enjoy the journey, experience something new and meaningful, while finding out something about themselves along the way.

Yet these 7 mantras aren’t just for the days when we set foot on Earth that is new. Each step we take through our daily routines is also an opportunity to see and experience something new. We travel each day to work, to run errands, or have a family meal together.

If we approach each journey in life, whether to a summit or just down the street, these mantras can help every one of us find the perfect moments of life that are just waiting for us right now. [Read more…]

6 Reasons Why We Left Our Hearts in Myanmar (After Travelling 100km on Foot)

We spent 3 days/2 nights trekking from Kalaw to Inle Lake, which was 65km in total. Then we spent another 2 days/1 night in Hsipaw for another 35km. Seeing 100km as the total distance covered is something special for me, but that’s not the reason why we left our hearts in Myanmar.

There’s something special about being able to take what you’re given and turn it into something magical. So often we take for granted all of the blessings we have been given in daily life. We like the idea of visiting a mountain village or to lend a helping hand there, but could we thrive there if that was our home? In Myanmar, they call what we would see as a disadvantage being part of the very core of what makes them human.

Here are 6 other reasons why I and the team feel like we’ve left part of ourselves behind after our recent visit. [Read more…]

6 Lessons We Learnt from the Annapurna Base Camp Trek

One of the most popular treks in the Himalayas is the Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek. Very few journeys offer such a wide variety of challenges and landscapes. You’ll find high altitudes, rhododendron forests, and rice paddies along the way. It is unique, spectacular, and something that changes your perspective about life itself.

Our group put together some of the personal lessons learnt while trekking ABC. Although we all had our own reasons for embarking on this adventure, ABC brought us together.  [Read more…]

The Trek of Hope – Philippines 2016

This is the third year I have visited the Philippines representing Trek For Hope, and in many ways it still feels like every step I take is a first footstep. Every year I feel like we get closer to the goal of providing a hand up to all those who need it, yet so many find themselves in circumstances which many would consider to be unfathomable.

We do this not to bring glory to ourselves, but to give glory for the hopes, efforts, and daily striving of the people we were so privileged to serve. As with every trip like this, my heart has been changed in numerous ways.

Here is our 2016 journey.  Come join us. [Read more…]

Ode to the Women You Meet on the Trail

Ode to the Women You Meet on the Trail

Your backpack was heavy, but you carried it so.
The trail has been calling, so off you must go.
The tropical heat may try to make your ambition take a seat.
Yet you take one step ever forward, a mountain’s summit to greet.

The sweat streams down your face, but still you smile.
A day on the trail makes it all worthwhile.
All the stress, the responsibilities, the cares of this world.
Everything disappears because on the trail, you’re not “just a girl.”

You’re a conqueror. A warrior. A spirit striving for adventure.
A poet. A photographer. An artist never censured.
The trail is a venture that touches your soul like none other.
Every day is a new day, a new chance to discover.

Discover who you are and who you are meant to be.
Discover what Mother Nature thinks of impossibility.
Discover that there is perfection in every moment on the trail.
Discover that success can be found, even when you fail.

Here’s to you and what you do and who you are each day.
Here’s to a new trail that leads you in a new and exciting way.
Keep exploring, keep hiking, keep finding something new.
In doing so, the world will always want to be a little more like you.

Happy International Women’s Day!

Wisdom of the Mysterious Land – Upper Mustang

“Sky Cave in the Upper Mustang and its capital, Lo Mantang.”

By Lily Ho, Malaysia

Mustang – some call it “The loss of Kingdom”, others call it “the desert of Nepal”. This place is located within the world’s highest mountain range and is to the south of Tibet Autonomous Region. It is widely believed that Mustang is one of those places where traditional Tibetan culture still remains intact and untouched. This was the main reason for me to visit this remote Kingdom of Mustang. The old-style of Tibetan culture remains after Tibetans had escaped away from their homeland via the Himalayas due to persecution. This culture may not be found easily in the Tibet Autonomous Region today.  [Read more…]
