I remembered handing over a guitar to Swee Chiow during a Trek For Hope briefing session just over a year ago. I have read in his autobiography that he used to play the instrument as the lead guitarist in his band during his younger days. He gamely took over it and plucked a mesmerizing solo piece – The Leader of The Band. [Read more…]
Has this ever happened to you?
Something happens during your routine and there are so many twists and turns that you feel almost lost. Like an easy drive home from work can be disrupted by a car accident which gets you stuck in the traffic for hours. How about planning to get settled down at the end of the day to read a book, only to be disrupted by a baby’s crying? You try to get a quick something to eat and the phone rings insistently or an email that pops up in your mobile which comes with the heading “Urgent?”
You are not alone. [Read more…]
It has been exactly a year since I last joined YMCA Outdoors and Adventures for an event. Gunung Lambak was my induction climb. Not that I have been keeping track of dates, but it was the admin from the YMCA who reminded me when I was signing up for this event that my membership had expired in July and I had to pay a full fees if I were to go on this trip with them.
So with a renewed alliance with them and the promise of a spectacular sunrise at one of the finest peaks in Malaysia, I joined 24 other fellow adventurers on an overnight coach for a road trip north to Negeri Sembilan. [Read more…]
Sungai Lembing has a legend that their local ruler one day saw a vision of a spear in the river and so the town was named after this vision. The extra games were discarded so we could all gather our strength for the next two days of trekking!
“I am always after spectacular sunrises. SG Lembing has always been one of the places in Malaysia I wanted to visit after being introduced to this place by one of teammates.” [Read more…]
I saw the peak in my dreams
it scratched the edge of the sky
with its long granite fingernail
and popping the clouds
it rained down on the plump pitcher plants
their mouths open for insects
rained down on the screeching hornbills
while mountain squirrels move stealthily
through the aged rocks
and I continued to dream [Read more…]
Grace Tan, Singapore, is winner of the Best Individual Blog at the Singapore Blog Awards 2013 and author of “Blogging for a Living”. She blogs at http://workingwithgrace.wordpress.com where she interviews millionaires, celebrities and entrepreneurs for their inspiring life story.
I met up with Grace recently during a talk event where she shared with the audience about her climb to Mount Kinabalu, Malaysia in 2012. In this story, we turned the tables on the “blog interviewer” and probed her for more details on her adventure.
First of all, what defines “Adventure” in your dictionary?
Sorry to disappoint but I’m not the “adventurous” sort. 😀 I would not ordinarily attempt mountain climbing, skydiving, scuba diving, etc. I’d define “adventure” as anything I have not attempted before – visiting a country for the first time, picking up a new sport, etc. [Read more…]
