Since the first Marvel comic book was published in October 1939, a comic which featured several superhero characters, most notably the Human Torch and the Sub-Mariner, children and adults all around the world have been enchanted by the tales of superhuman strength and the willpower these characters possessed.
Toys, video games, and other merchandise featuring Marvel’s most popular characters have been hugely popular and this popularity has only increased since Marvel started their own studios to produce one of the most successful series of movies in history! Many may go to these movies and be inspired to chase their dreams or defeat evil. After the cast of The Amazing Spider-man 2 came to Singapore and lend their support for Earth Hour 2014, I realize that we can also draw inspiration from these superheroes with regards to hiking and nature.
Here are a compilation of 5 unforgettable superhero quotes that continue to inspire me. Enjoy the quotes and my hope is that you can draw inspiration from these superheroes as much as I have.
#1. “AVENGERS ASSEMBLE!!!!!!!” – Captain America
Following the leadership of the appointed leader of a team or a guide that is going to lead you through the hiking path is extremely important. When hiking with a team, there will always be different ideas and opinions, but what is most important is the ability to be humble and submit to the leader. They are responsible for making sure everyone comes out safe and can have an enjoyable time in the process.
Also applicable in this circumstance: “Work as a team? Why not? I am for it!” – Tony Stark
#2. “Becoming an Avenger is not a right…but a privilege.” – Tony Stark
So you are an experienced hiker and you might think you know this trekking route better than anyone else. This knowledge might tempt you to march ahead of everyone else. Following what the leader of the group wants to do? Please – you should be the leader, right?. Recognise that you are still part of the team, enjoy the company of your fellow trekkers, and let your experience enhance the trip for the team instead of detract from it. Be an encouragement!
#3. “My fault – all my fault! If only I had stopped him when I could have! But I didn’t – and now – Uncle Ben – is dead.” – Peter Parker, Spiderman
Never allow yourself to wallow in self-pity. There are many moments during a hike when tiredness will set in and you’ll begin to question why are you even bothering with a hike! Why be out in the middle of nowhere with a pit in the ground for a toilet and a sleeping bag when you could be lying on that plush cushion on a Sunday morning? Snap out of it and rise up above the occasion like Spidey!
This quote from the X-Men applies as well: “This is My Body, My Mind. Get OUT!!!” – Professor Xavier
#4. “Something is coming your way… Something BIG!” – Bruce Banner, Hulk
Dare to dream and expect something big! First of all, it will keep you positive and motivate you to keep going even when there is rough terrain approaching. This adversity is only temporary and will allow you to achieve the goal of your trek! If you are not expecting to be rewarded by a fantastic sunset, a great lake view or have no expectation of a reward for your efforts, then quite frankly, you might as well stay at home.
#5. “My Spidey Sense is tingling!”– Spiderman
Be alert always. Be well prepared for the hike. Have a good night of rest. Bring and drink an adequate amount of water. Research the area you and your team are about to explore. All of this will help to enhance the awareness and safety of your team!
Once you have completed your hike, take a moment and pause to reflect about the journey. Congratulate yourself and your teammates for a job well done! As you return to your other secret identity, also known as real life, always remember that you have a greater mission to achieve: to give whatever it takes to help protect Earth and Mother Nature.
“And there came a day unlike any other, when Earth’s mightiest heroes were united against a common threat! On that day the Avengers were born! – To fight the foes no single hero could withstand!”
– The Avengers
