At night, some of the most famous destinations in the world take on a new persona with the night sky for entertainment and perhaps a campfire. Here are some of the best places to camp out under the stars in Southeast Asia.


1. Phnom Kulen (Cambodia)
Phnom Kulen is one of Cambodia’s National Parks. It translates as Mountain of lychees and is famed for its beautiful waterfalls and the Valley of a Thousand Lingas. This is a very atmospheric place to spend the night in ancient ruins and the forest, and the sound of the rushing water will send you to sleep.


2. Mount Rinjani (Indonesia)
For a night of fire why not camp near an active volcano. Mount Rinjani on Lombok is part of the famous Pacific Ring of Fire. The park has calderas and some amazing geological formations. With sparks flying into the night and a starry sky, sleeping out here is an unforgettable experience.

3. Doi Chiang Dao (Thailand)
The intriguing limestone massif of Doi Chiang Dao is in Northern Thailand on the border with Burma. It is located in Pha Daeng National Park which is one of the most famous birdwatching areas in Southeast Asia. Humes Pheasant and the Giant Nuthatch are just two of the thousands of species here. You’ll fall asleep gazing at the stars and awake to a chorus of birdsong at dawn. Don’t forget to obtain a permit before camping here.

Just 4 hours’ drive from Surabaya, Mount Bromo is one of East Java’s most spectacular sights. This famous volcano is in the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park; an 800 km area full of dramatic landscapes. One of the best reasons to camp under the stars here is to view the sunrise over Mount Bromo- an unforgettable sight.


5. Mount Batur (Indonesia)
A night under the stars at Mount Batur is an exciting way to sleep out in Bali. Mount Batur is an active volcano between two calderas and surrounded by forest, villages, and a beautiful lake, Danau Batur. You’ll find some excellent camping places here to sleep out in the open and enjoy nature at its finest.


6. El Nido Palawan (Philippines)
El Nido is one of the most beautiful archipelagos and ecosystems in the Philippines. Located on Palawan there are communities here living alongside a prolific amount of wildlife, and camping out here is an exciting experience. You’ll hear animal sounds as the waves lull you to sleep, and you’ll wake up to a magnificent sunrise. With 50 beaches and five types of forest, there are lots of good camping spots to choose.


7. Mount Pulag (Philippines)
Mount Pulag is a remarkable place in the Philippines. It is the third highest mountain and is renowned for its sea of clouds. Camp out here under the stars and you’re in for one of the world’s most beautiful phenomena. At dawn, Mount Pulag is renowned for its views of the Milky Way Galaxy that visitors travel to see. Camping gets you a ringside seat for this feat of nature.
